“oh, that’s your —” if this were an animated movie there would be a horrible cut away of hera’s heart shattering. they’d only met that night somehow despite having mutual friends for years and they’d clicked so well. she was convinced she’d met her total soulmate in someone that had been a stranger for so long. until they eventually pointed out their current significant other at the other side of the room. “cool. that’s cool. i — that’s super cool.”

“it’s fine, okay?” hera didn’t mean to snap, especially not at them when they hadn’t done anything wrong. her boyfriend had just cancelled last minute. again. needed his third ‘night with the boys’ this week more than he needed to see her, apparently. it wasn’t a big deal and she brushed it off as casually as she could, tossing her phone aside and forcing lips to turn upwards into a bit of a grimace. “i guess that means you’re stuck with me for the night,” she decided before a moment of insecurity hit, “ —if that’s alright?”

"i didn’t break up with you because i stopped loving you.” the second the words left her lips hera wanted to take them back, her mouth opening and closing a few times but nothing else coming. eventually, she cast her gaze away from them and then managed to find her voice. “just  — forget i said that.”

“so... i know we have plans this weekend but i’m going to have to cancel.” hera pulled a bit of a face at her own words, not really happy to have to be delivering them. “our usual close called in sick for the rest of the week so i guess i’m going to be stuck working late  — we can reschedule though, right? i’ll make it up to you!”

admittedly when she’d first started looking for a roommate, hera had been a little naïve and opened up her search to anyone and everyone. luckily she hadn’t ended up with a total creep and instead a roommate that she liked. they’d clicked from the get-go, perhaps a little too well, but for the first time since they’d moved in things felt awkward. all thanks to the fact her roommate was no longer single. settling herself down onto the couch beside them, she idly scrolled through her phone while glancing at them out of the corner of her eye. “so... any plans for tonight?”

“look. i know this... never happens but i’m willing to admit it on this occasion... i was wrong. you’re not always an ass.” hera sounded genuinely pained by her own words; which mostly she was. admitting that she was wrong was one thing but to them? it only make it a thousand times worse. “ —that doesn’t mean i don’t think you’re mostly an ass, though.”

hera hadn’t thought twice in handing them over her phone to show off a few pictures of her latest paintings — even stepping out of the room to go grab herself a drink and leaving them to it. it was only on her way back that it dawned on her those photos weren’t far off a slightly more private selection and her feet sped up instantly, heading back into the room with a panicked breath. “i need that back—” she insisted, slipping her phone out of their hand and noting the picture on the screen, realising she was a little too late. “well... you weren’t supposed to see that.”
